This is a very pretty and colorful book constructed with outstanding paper and quality binding. However the subject presentation seems geared toward high school age readers. A number of interesting example files are available and they integrate seamlessly with the chapter material. But the real problem is as follows. The author(s) will show a project (brochure, newsletter, etc.) that the reader is going to create using MS Publisher. Then the author will direct the reader step-by-step on how to achieve the desired end result. For instance: choose this option, pick this menu item, highlight this text, insert this file, and so on. But the author never explains WHY we did these things. Consequently if a reader is faced with creating a totally different project than the example he just worked on this book is no more useful than if the reader never opened it.
Books should provide the reader with the overall scope of a computer program and relate the underlying theoretical concepts behind the package so that when the reader is later confronted with needs unlike any of the included examples, s/he will be able to figure out on his/her own how to consummate the project. In this regard, the author fails miserably.

Next week, Klein Independent School District officials will launch an in-depth discussion on the district’s 2010-11 school year budget, which includes a projected $4.1 million deficit that will be covered with “rainy day” funds.
July 26 workshop
The board of trustee’s public budget workshop is set for July 26 at 6 p.m. in the Klein ISD board room, 7200 Spring-Cypress Road.
Klein ISD Superintendent Jim Cain said the budget will go to the board for a vote on Aug. 31. However, the board will be asked to approve the staff compensation plan, which could include an employee pay raise, at the budget workshop.
Thomas Petrek, Klein ISD’s assistant superintendent of financial services, said the district’s projected $312,846,356 in general fund revenues will fall about $4.1 million short of covering projected expenditures.
In addition to rising operating and maintenance expenses, the district is facing two large expenditures that add to the bottom line: the opening of Ulrich Intermediate School on Spring-Cypress Road and a Texas Attorney General-mandated employee “step” pay raise.
Ulrich’s opening will cost about $3.5 million in staffing and operational costs, which will be a permanent addition to the district’s annual budget.
Mandated pay increase
The mandated step pay increase — about 1 percent for all teachers, nurses, speech pathologists,...

In a boost to the state’s economy, UTC Fire & Security will solidify and expand its presence in Florida by locating the headquarters for its Global Security Products, Global Fire Products and Fire & Security Services groups in the state, and by establishing a new fire research and test center here.
“UTC’s decision to strengthen its presence in our state is a vote of confidence in Florida’s ability to help the company achieve long-term business goals,” said Governor Crist. “Our support of such efforts is vital to ensuring continuous economic growth and diversification.”
When UTC Fire & Security acquired GE Security earlier this year, it took ownership of facilities in Palm Beach and Manatee counties. After reaching agreement with state and local officials, the company committed to retaining approximately 338 jobs in Florida, creating 45 new positions, relocating certain headquarters operations to Lakewood Ranch in Manatee County, and developing a multi-million-dollar Fire Innovation and Test Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The agreement secures hundreds of well-paying Florida jobs, many in the managerial and technical fields, and sets the stage for future employment growth. Plans for a new research and test center will build the tax base and increase construction employment.
UTC Fire & Security President William Brown commented that the consolidation of these businesses in Florida allow...
